About Shannon Bonk, M.S. CCC-SLP
I have been providing speech-language services to children and families in the Northern Virginia area for 26 years. I received my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have worked in many settings including private clinics, hospitals and schools. After spending five years working as a speech pathologist in Fairfax County Public Schools serving the Preschool and Moderate-Severe Disabilities program (1994-1999), I became a preschool classbased teacher (1999-2002) teaching children with a variety of disabilities including: autism, Downs Syndrome, and cerebral palsy. I enjoyed collaborating with other professionals and parents to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) that worked for children.
I opened my private practice in the Fall of 2002. Since then I have had the privilege and joy of working with children and their families in their most natural environment...home.
Throughout my years, I have gained extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of:
Autism Spectrum Disorders
Pervasive Developmental Disorders
Oral-Motor and Feeding Disorders
Articulation Delays
Apraxia
Phonological Disorders
Sensory Integration Disorders
Pragmatic Language Disorders
Phonemic Awareness Disorders
Language and Literacy Disorders
Dynavox, LAMP and Proloquo2go
I have additional training in:
Prompt
Beckman Oral-Motor
Picture Exchange Communication (PECS)
Neurodevelopmental Treatment
Committed to helping children and families communicate effectively
In 2017, my grandson was diagnosed with a rare medical condition that resulted in two major surgeries. After those surgeries, he has needed help to develop his fine motor, gross motor, and speech skills. For many years, I have been on the therapy side. But now, I am also on the family side. I believe this has only strengthened my love for, and dedication to, my profession.
